Recommend me a good Laptop

Postby Kruszer » Wed Jul 27, 2011 5:47 am

I'm in the market for a good and decently affordable but well-rounded laptop. It has to be a PC because I don't want to learn a new operating system and I would appreciate one of the bigger ones with a larger screen rather than one of those tiny NetBooks. What should I be looking for as far as Processor, RAM, and hard drive space in one?

Things it will be used for:
College
Surfing the net
Playing DVDs/BD
Maybe some light gaming, but it doesn't have to be too fancy in that area.

Things that it needs:
Wireless internet card (Which is probably standard nowadays)
multiple USB ports

this is what I currently use... http://www.gadgets-freak.biz/hp-g62-457 ... processor/

I think you might find it sufficient enough, keep in mind that I'm not in college though so I may not have factored that in just yet. Still I got this one for a little more than 600 dollars at Best Buy in January

My laptop is ibuypower which for the most part worked fine aside from the power and heating problems I started having this past week. Asus is another good brand.

Asus is also a good brand.

Right now at the very least get 4 gb of RAM, hard drive the bigger the better but at the very least 250 gb though I would get more if you are going to have a good number of games or other media. Processor speed mine is 2.4 ghz duo core but more speed is never a bad thing either. If you are just using for casual still though the amount I just stated should be fine. And if you are going to do a decent amount of gaming make sure to get a dedicated video card.

Honestly I don't keep up with what's new that much anymore. So my suggestion would be to look at the major name brands (Dell, Gateway, Toshiba, Asus, Sony) and see what's available.

I will second the ram requirement. Windows 7 likes lots of ram, especially if you're planning on running the Aereo interface.

I think we are missing a key bit of info, a price range.

I pretty much said, fresh out of the box... mine was 600 at best buy. I'm not sure if that fits his range, but I did say it...

Actually mine might cost more now since I got mine in january.

Not from you, but Kruszer. Since you need to get the best one for the price you don't want to go over.

I have a little over $1,000 saved to do with what I please. Somewhere within there but the cheaper the better. I don't want some cheap piece of scrap though, I want to find a good balance between something decently priced and a trusted quality machine that'll last a while.

For instance something like this seems like a good deal but would it work for what I want to do?:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+Pavilion+Laptop+/+AMD+Phenom%26%23153%3B+II+Processor+/+17.3%22+Display+/+4GB+Memory+/+500GB+Hard+Drive+-+Pewter/2881467.p?id=1218359112138&skuId=2881467

Something with a BD Player would be ideal though unless they're going the push the price up.

Personally I despise HP and would never buy another computer from them, but... Based what you've said you want to do with this computer, that HP should do everything you want. As you noted, it doesn't have a blue-ray player.

yeah, I don't know how to help you on the blue ray... that might raise the cost a bit. Not sure if my computer has a BD Player... probably not, but I have no need for it yet.

I'll see if I can find a computer that matches your needs for less than 800 dollars... I don't know if I can, but it's worth a shot.

Yeah,
I'm with Kirschy on the new HP stuff.
It is has been really crappy.

I've been hearing about, and seeing drive problems especially with the DVD\Burners failing.
But this is a mechanical part, and has the best chance of failure, next to the Hard Drive, or Fans.

Well....
If you haven't looked at the Cnet Laptop Reviews....
http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/

Also, go do some test typing if you can.
Remember: Your going to be using this for the next 2 - 4 years.
If your not comfortable with the way one feels, or the case is really flimsy on the one your testing out.
Take that into consideration, and move on to the next Laptop candidate.

After you have sampled several.
See which ones best match your criteria and price range.
Then narrow it down to just one.

Then see if it can be modified to meet all your criteria,
and still stay within your set price range.

Yeah, I know this is basically just general information common sense buying.
But, most people who impulse buy.
End up with something that doesn't perform to their satisfaction, and ends up taking it back.

Good luck with The Hunt.

My personal experience with hp is to stay away from them. When, not if, they fail they do so big time.

Alright Consensus is that HP sucks, staying away from them. Speaking of it reminds me of my last printer which was HP and yeah, it went to shit.

EDIT: I found this Acer one and it's specs are similar.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834215121

The hard drive space is not as good though, but it probably would be fine, so at the moment this is my number 1 prospect.

So basically the refined list of specs I'm looking for ideally are:
Under $600
16-17' monitor
At least 4 GB Memory
500 GB hard drive or more

That Acer Laptop almost meets your spec's. :D
But I wonder if there are any Computer Sellers, or Builders that carry Acer Laptops near you?

My reasoning is that the Hard Drive is a standard 2.5" SATA 5400RPM Drive.
If you have a dealer close to you that sells the Acer Laptops.
See if they can up grade the Hard Drive to 500Gig on it for you.
Right now Laptop Hard Drives that I'm seeing, are pretty cheap.
Take a look at this 1000Gig WD.
http://www.nanosys1.com/storage-laptop- ... igher.html
Plus, 750Gig or smaller are pretty cheap too.

Except for the HD it should work fine. However there are a bunch of other laptops I'm seeing at Newegg that look like they might meet your requirements. Including some from Dell, Sony, and Toshiba. with 500 GB HDs.

Yeah, I think I've mostly settled on this one now.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Dell+-+Inspiron+Laptop+/+Intel%26%23174%3B+Core%26%23153%3B+i3+Processor+/+15.6%26%2334%3B+Display+-+Mars+Black/3048064.p?id=1218374275183&skuId=3048064

The price is great, the monitor is not ideal but very close, the memory is awesome, and I'll have 500 gigs of hard drive space to work with. I will probably order this on Thursday.

The only thing that I can comment on the laptop you mentioned is that I think you wanted a dedicated video card but I am fairly certain that one is integrated.

Well, I wasn't really concerned about games since I have my current desktop for that. As long as this new laptop has good enough hardware in that integrated card to run a basic, not-particularly-graphic intensive, strategy game like Starcraft or Star Trek Armada II or visual novels like Shuffle! then I'll be good.
