Anti-Virus/Spyware/Malware Scanning Software?

Postby Ensign Janitor Tzap » Mon Jun 06, 2011 12:50 pm

I need some recommendations for some good Anti-Virus/Spyware/Malware Scanning Software.

I really don't want to be spending a lot of money.
{Free would be great!}

Since I have already spent some $60.00 or more.
For two programs that have got paid subscriptions.
And I've got a little less than a year left before they expire.

I'm finding problems with them.
They fight for control of the system, and this can lead to things sneaking in.

I've used Trend Micro's HouseCall before: http://us.trendmicro.com/us/home/ (Link on the right side under the chart.)

Since I switched to Linux I don't use AV programs anymore. I suppose I could install Clam AV or one of the other AV programs for Linux, but there's just not much point since there really aren't any Linux viruses in the wild and those viruses people have tried to create have been dismal failures... However when I deal with Windows systems for friends and families, I usually recommend the free versions of AVG and Avast. They may not be the best that money can buy (last I heard I think Kapersky took that honor), but they work well enough and they have the great virtue of being free (both the programs and the updates) so friends and family will actually install them and keep them up-to-date.

As for spyware... I used to recommend Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy. However I dropped both a few years ago. Ad-Aware after one of their versions became basically unworkable and Spybot after I had to deal with issues with it. So I wouldn't recommend either of those programs. However since the free versions both Avast and AVG scan for some spyware, I don't really see it as an issue.

So I guess what I'm saying is that I'd recommend either AVG Free or Avast Free.

Here's what I've been finding, out on the Wild Woolly Web.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.
Looks nice, easy to use interface.
Hasn't found anything.

SuperAntiSpyware.
Easy too use.
Found Adaware and quarantined it.

CCleaner.
Cleans up the junk leftover, from software that has been installed or uninstalled.
As well as bad registry errors.

I use to run Ad-Aware back a few years ago.
But, the latest versions don't allow it to be run as a stand alone scanner.
Thus, it will battle for control of the computer, with other Scanner Software.
The same for Avast!
Have a copy of Spybot, though it doesn't seem to find anything of late.
A new Beta version 2.0 is currently under going testing.
But should be released soon..

Currently the two paid Scanner Softwares; Zone Alarm Security Suite{Kapersky},
and Fix It Pro Utilities{Avanquest} are the main two gorillas sitting on my Hard Drive.
But Fix It is currently loosing, it failed too detect several trojan attacks,
and has been giving me false alarms about other programs.
Plus, It will shut down Windows Automatic Update if your not careful.

I've tried Trend Micro's HouseCall.
But it has never been able to finish,
and has locked up my system.
From what I was told.
HouseCall tends to work best on fast stable connections.
Unfortunately, I have neither.
I have messed a bit with Microsquish Security Suite.
Not that impressed with it.

That's pretty much the reason I didn't recommend it. I stopped using it to double check AVG or Avast years ago when they brought out a new version that just didn't work very well (if at all) on my computer back when I was running Windows XP. After repeated failure to run/crashes I just decided not to use it anymore.
