Licensing: NONE
Genre: Drama, Romance, Slice of Life, Supernatural
Age Rating: TVPG
Series Length: 24 episodes

yet again another review of a Key anime. damn they like making drama

Story
Tomoya Okazaki is your typical high school dead-beat. he has family issues, doesn't really get involved in any school activities or clubs, and hangs out with a punk with an equal commitment to doing nothing special, that is, until he met Nagisa Furukawa, a fellow senior repeating his year, and his life turned on its head as he compelled himself to help her realize a dream of hers.

yup, yet another Key drama. unlike the prior Air and Kanon, Clannad, while it was a dating sim, it completely lacked any pornographic elements, making this show completely without flags for sex scenes, though i couldn't help but look for them anyway (it's always a bit funny to see where the main and the chick would start bumping uglies in game to drama series, if they weren't in reality).

either way, the story isn't really effected by whether or not there was sex in the original game or not. the structure of Clannad again mirrors that of the prior two Key dramas, in that there's a succession of anime high school chicks which show up, the main character goes through some sort of relationship with them and moves on. Clannad i felt did this the best out of the other two since you never lost sight of the primary romantic interest. no matter what happened, there was never much question of who Tomoya was romantically interested in, which allowed for a very proper balance in characters. because of this, feelings towards individual characters were able to be properly fleshed out and didn't send any mixed signals.

then again, Clannad had its own set of issues. this Key work, unlike previous masterpieces, did not evoke the same emotion that Air and Kanon did. it was not strong enough to evoke tears from me. certainly parts were tragic in their own light, but the way in which it was presented felt either overblown and melodramatic, or tainted by humor just seconds before. furthermore, while the ending was somewhat uplifting, it didn't provide the same emotional crescendo that both other Key animes did to give such an impact. certainly it was wonderful, but not quite as good as it could have been. And finally, the characters weren't quite as good as prior dramas either. the cast was largely made up of cliches, from the emo with a heart of gold Tomoya, to the Tsundere/timid girl Fujibayashi twins, to the physically and emotionally weak Nagisa, i couldn't help but moan a little at the physical puns that were displayed on screen. despite this, there were several characters which did not fit a direct mold, such as Fuko, who i like to describe as Ayu from Kanon (more than one reason for this) on acid, which is a good thing.

on a more chipper note, the dialog is even further improved in Clannad. speech was fluid, snappy, and had great timing. despite how in places it degraded some of the drama, the aforementioned comedy made the more stock characters more interesting. still, the dialog in Clannad is some of the best i've ever heard in an anime. it was very quick and dynamic and set mood almost perfectly. unfortunately, sometimes the mood bled into the next one and effected perception. regardless, combined with the great slapstick, the expressiveness of the dialog made the show far more than watchable, i just wish i walked away with something more profound.

Animation
yet another animation masterpiece by Kyoto Studios. styling remained the same as the prior two Key animes, and animation remained as fluid and well paced as ever. the amount of slapstick was perfectly implemented and timed perfectly with all the dialog. again and again, hats off to Kyoto.

Audio
again a good job in the audio department. while the opening was largely forgettable, i loved the Dango song. sound effects were well timed and audio set the mood well with few exceptions. not much else i can really add other than it was in line with prior efforts.

Japanese Dub
superb, were you expecting anything else? certainly the cast wasn't as colorful as Kanon, but for what they were, the cast remained top notch.

English Dub
are you expecting me to type something here? ADV hasn't picked it up yet, and from my opinion on Kanon's English dub, i'm happier ignorant.

Final Word
I'll be frank, Clannad for me was a disappointment. coming off of the emotional roller coasters that were Air and Kanon, the lack of emotional power in Clannad was sort of a let down. regardless, the show has many of it's own merits and is an enjoyable watch which i certainly do not regret. hell, if it can convince me to sing the Big Dango Family song, well hell, it's succeeded at something.

I present Clannad with a 4... out of 5

Key stuff is awesome, this one was great too. I think Clannad succeded more as a comedy than a drama. And the whole thing would be better without the Fuko arc, oh how much I hated that kid. >_O

thanks. Clannad just didn't click with me all that well, but i maintain that Key's (or Kyoto's, whoever is writing) gift with dialog is a huge influence on me and my writing. to have that clever presentation through dialog is very important to me in my writing. still, the emotional aspects weren't up to snuff with the rest of their works. i'll wait another six years for Rewrite, though it may show up earlier than that...

silence heathen! Fuko was the best character in that show, though i will concede they stretched my patience when she showed up on random occasion. and i will agree, it was pretty much closer to a more serious romantic comedy than anything else, but Kannon had some top notch comedy but still managed to bring the drama.
